Résumé : | It has been over 35 years since Howard S. Becker first reported his research findings on marijuana use. In the original report (1953) and subsequent discussions of the findings (1973) Becker traces the process through which individuals became marijuana (drug) users and offers a descriptive typology of users' relations to the drug. Becker's presentation of how individuals come to use marijuana was presented as a critique of the then prevalent (and recently re-emerging) view that drug use was best understood as a manifestation of individual psychological predispositions. Becker points to the logical inadequacies of such views and offers in its place a structural or interactive model which he constructs from his interview data. With drug use in the 80's deemed the scourge of our time it is important that sociologists review their past contributions to the drug use debate and reassert their ability to contribute to the current debate. It is within this framework that the authors have attempted their replication of Beeker's classic work. Our results were consistent with his general framework while suggesting several areas of needed elaboration. A revised model is proposed. |
