Résumé : | At the end of the 1970s, Claude Olivenstein visited a television set for a debate on "drugs". He was accompanied by a young student and patient, future carer, Alexis Champon. The discussion was lively and opinions were rife. There was gossip, there were questions, and they were startled by it all. On a television set, we often find the strength to support the ills of others. Here, the unfortunate soul was "the drug addict", counted on him the audience and as if he were drowning, and the art of throwing a lifeline was brought to its conversational peak. At one point, a journalist called out without hesitation to the young Alexis, who had been silent up to that point: "But why did you take drugs? Why????" (throwing the lifeline). Sudden silence fell upon the audience, all eyes turned to Alexis' face, who freezed; he was trapped. A close-up revealed the indecency of the question: it was as if Alexis was naked or as if he were drowning. In a low voice, with a neutral face, Alexis began: "... It was a case of being between dying of boredom and dying of pleasure...", and remained quiet. A white man, a painful figure of embarrassment on the set - well, what did he say? Finally, the exchange resumed, dealing with something else, as if he had not spoken. The question, thrown like a lead buoy to a head still floating out of the water, exploded in the air. A few words, a mute voice and a path other than that of "why?" opened up. [Extract] |
