During the first half of 2000, SISVEA gathered data on 6,224 patients in government treatment centers (GTCs) and 3,913 patients in nongovernment treatment centers (NGCs). The data show that a majority of patients in GTCs and NGCs were multiple drug users. In both types of facilities, alcohol and marijuana were the most frequently reported drugs of first use and, together, represented slightly more than half of the patient reports on drug of onset. Cocaine was the current drug of use among 45 percent of the GTC patients and 22.2 percent of the NGC patients. Heroin was the current drug of abuse among one-quarter of the NGC patients but less than 3 percent of the GTC patients. Marijuana (39.2 percent), inhalants (21.8 percent), and cocaine (20.4 percent) were the drugs used by the largest proportions of juvenile arrestees. Alcohol was involved in 91 percent of the drug-related deaths in the first half of 2000. (Author' s abstract)
