Résumé :
ENGLISH :
In this presentation we report selected findings from a NIDA-funded study of new heroin users. Using a combination of ethnographic methods and social survey techniques, this study examines the initiation and continuation of heroin use among 18-25-year-olds. Of the 103 young adults (N=120) interviewed to date, 31 have overdosed, and more than one-third have witnessed overdose. This report considers the dynamics of overdose, including how factors such as setting, tolerance, perceived purity, and polydrug (particularly alcohol) use relate to heroin overdose. The report focuses primarily on the differential meanings of overdose among young adult injectors. In particular, it explores the causes of specific overdose incidents as perceived by users and the implications of these causes for implementing effective interventions. (Author' s abstract)
