Résumé : | I have put together this collection of material to serve three primary purposes. First, readers new to the social norms approach will find that the introductory chapter and discussion in the subsequent case studies lay out the basic principles of the model and formulations of how social norms interventions work. Second, the book aims to present a good deal of scientifically collected evidence supporting the potential for applying the model and its positive effect when evaluated in intervention case studies. Today most educators, counselors, and clinicians are hungry for results. Not only do they want assurance that they are not engaged in a futile strategy squandering time and resources, but they simultaneously need to satisfy funding agencies and community constituencies that increasingly call for programs using approaches that can actually demonstrate positive results. Indeed, I believe the biggest attraction of the approach (in addition to its emphasis on healthy imagery) is the variety of success stories in these case studies where no other approach has been able to produce this kind of result. Third, program educators, school administrators, and other prevention practitioners will find many examples of a variety of intervention messages and strategies that have been tested in this range of case studies. With appropriate modifications, many of these methods and messages can be implemented in other secondary school, college, and community contexts. (Extract of the publication) |
