ENGLISH: Narghile, also known as shisha or waterpipe, has become a favourite tobacco consumption among French youths. Method - A survey was conducted via the internet in young consumers to assess consumption as part of a larger survey on waterpipe smoking. Results - 326 answers have been analyzed coming from 73.9% men, less than 30 years old (91%), smokers for 2.6 years. Consumption is mainly occasional (60% between once a month and once a week), in the evening (87.2%) and during the week end (84.4%). The median duration of a course is 40-49 minutes. Waterpipe is smoked in a narghile-bar (26%), at friends' homes (26%) or at home (48%). The tobacco is bought in a tobacco shop in half of the cases only. Only 39% of the consumers declare that the water pipe is really toxic. The mouth piece is shared with other consumers without being changed in 80% of cases. Discussion - Whereas narghile-bars are spreading, the toxicity of the product is neglected. Only 1/10th of the consumers consider stopping, whereas 77% of cigarette smokers do. It is urgent to "destandardize" water pipe smoking before the total tobacco ban planned in France. |
