Résumé :
The opium economy beyond the rural farm level remains under-researched. As a result, counter-narcotics policies had to cope with a limited evidence base, increasing the risk of mistakes in addressing this complex problem. This volume is an attempt to remedy this situation, by broadening the analysis of the opium economy to encompass the rural farm level: opium trading, price patterns, the organised crime perspective, and macroeconomic dimensions. While it aspires to a greater comprehensiveness, this is not at the expense of depth of coverage, as most of the research presented in the volume is based on newly-gathered primary data. However, while it is beginning to fill in the overall picture of the opium economy, its findings and conclusions must be considered preliminary, subject to further adjustment through additional research.
