Résumé : | The Therapeutic Communities for Drug Addicts (CTD) arrived in Spain at a somewhat later date in 1979, though one of the first was a Therapeutic Community for the mentally ill that had been converted. Between 1979 and 1986 the CTD became the most active option for the treatment of addicts. They enjoyed considerable public help (and social initiatives) but they survived in a state of (sometimes extreme) precariousness. Furthermore they were created with a high level of spontaneity, a large number of volunteers, a strong dose of auto-didacticism and a marked community ideology. In 2005 we felt that the moment had arrived to come out into the open and a proposal was made to the Government Delegation for the Plan Nacional de Droga (National Drug Plan) to carry out research work concerning the situation in Spain of the Therapeutic Communities for drug addicts. The starting point was to repeat the study that had been proposed in 1986 and carried out throughout 1987 in order to find out what had really happened during those twenty years and to discover the present situation of these types of centres.
