ENGLISH : Authors created a Urban Geographical Information System (SIGU) containing the data related to all alcohol and drug-related ambulance emergency calls in Bologna from 1990 to 1994. The main areas where drug addicts and alcoholists were more frequently assisted have been singled out. Results show that generally in 2/3 of the cases drug related and alcohol related risk areas coincide, whereas there still exists some limited alcohol specific risk areas. In contrast with the national declining trend in the number of deaths by overdoses, in Bologna there has been an increase in the number of overdose-related emergency calls. The ambulance service received much more outdoor than indoor emergency calls, and this applied to both risk and non risk areas. An increasingly large number of drug addicts refuse to be hospitalized whereas among alcoholists a greater degree of compliance with hospital treatments can be found. Authors claim that the SIGU may represent a useful tool in analysing the data about drug-addiction and urban alcoholism. Indeed, it allows inter-temporal comparisons, throwing light on the geographical extent of the phenomenon and may help to anticipate relevant changes in the typical behaviour of these patients.
