(Résumé d'auteur) ENGLISH : When Pierre Fouquet demonstrated the value of the concept of alcohology in 1966, during a congress in Belgium, he borrowed the word from a Swiss jurist who had used it the previous year after having discovered it in a text written by a physician from Lausanne in 1923. However, the word was used for the first time in 1903, in German by Dr Robert Koppe, who worked in Moscow. The "adventures" of this word illustrate the originality and relevance of the alcohological approach: - its eclipsing history reflects the difficulty of dealing head-on with the problems of alcohol and illustrates the interferences between alcohology and politics; - its complex Arabo-Hellenic etymology, reflects the complexity of the field of alcohology. It is a combination of the popular word "alcohol", common to many languages, and the scientific suffix from the Greek "logos". The word can also illustrate a particular feature of the preventive and therapeutic approach in alcohology: we must learn to talk about alcohol in order to no longer drink excessively. With the formation of the Belgian and Swiss alcohology societies, the word has now returned to the countries where it was pronounced for the first time, leaving the Latin world where it was accepted up until now. It should promote the cultural approach to problems related to alcohol consumption. This approach, recognized in wine-producing countries where the intellectual culture "bathes" in alcohol, must be developed in other countries, even if alcohol has tended to have its mark in popular drinking cultures and drinking songs. In this way, prevention and treatment can achieve a fully human dimension. (Author' s abstract) |
