ENGLISH : Opinions concerning the effect of methadone maintenance on employment status are subject to some disagreement. The view that substitution contributes towards integration into work (integration hypothesis) is opposed by the view that substitution can make no fundamental contribution towards changing employment status (continuity hypothesis). The objective of the present investigation, conducted in individuals attending Swiss out-patient treatments during the period 1995-98 (N=1404), was to clarify whether there were differences with regard to integration into work between opiate-dependent individuals on substitution therapy and those not receiving substitution. Logistic regression analysis taking account of sex, age and length of treatment revealed no evidence that methadone substitution had any effect on integration into the life of work.
