Résumé : |
ENGLISH : This paper presents some findings from a qualitative study of a group of adolescents who entered a residential substance abuse treatment program in a western state during the year 2000. The primary aim of this study was to examine more closely what occurs during and after drug treatment for adolescents. The need for a closer examination is evident when reviewing the existing literature on the fate of adolescents in treatment. The research suggests that, although treatment can indeed "work" if it continues long enough, the success rate for teenagers - however measured-is often disturbingly low. Relatively little is known about why success is so often elusive or what factors both in and out of the treatment setting encourage success or hinder it. While treatment is more likely to work for those who remain in it for a reasonably long time, little is known about why so many do not stay long. Even in good programs, many adolescents do not succeed, or they get in trouble relatively quickly once they leave; however, not enough is known about why (for general reviews, see, for example, Rutherford & Banta-Green, 1998; Muck, Zempolich, & Titus, 2001; Williams, Chang, & the Addiction Centre Research Group, 2000; Stevens & Morral, 2002; Drug Strategies, 2003).
