Résumé : | First phase to explore risky behaviours related to alcohol and also to driving and to substance abuse by young people. Comparing the first results of the reports from the different country, some key concepts seem to be the same, while in other cases the different cultures seem to deeply influence both the evaluation of risk and the types of very risky behaviours. Young people between 14 and 22 in France, Germany and Italy consider risk to be a positive challenge. On the contrary, Spanish youth apply a twofold meaning to risk: one of danger, and the other of amusement. In Greece risk is perceived as a tool of personal growth, while the British link it to adrenaline excitement. In all cases risk is linked to the search for experience or individual growth. But why do young people in Europe take risks? In Italy they do so in order to be noticed as part of a group, in France they desire new experiences, while Greeks and Britons affirm that risk is a part of being young. In regards to behaviours which are considered for the most part risky, the use of drugs appears in every country except Italy, where the range is led by the relational problems, and United Kingdom where risky behaviours are normally linked to an immediate danger (physical violence, fights) rather than to long term consequences. In regards to prevention, all young people interviewed believe that personal experience may help avoiding future risks (physiologic risk of growing up). Therefore, though in the frame of clear rules, they require space for experimentation, sharing and discussing their experiences with peers. Adults are invested with the task of establishing the rules (Italy and Germany), provided that they do not pretend to play the roles of young people (Germany). Another need discovered through the study is that young people want to play their own part in prevention (Italy, Spain, France) for the reason, as they stress, of the inefficiency of traditional approach which does not succeed to really influence risky behaviours as an action promoted by the youths themselves could do.
