Résumé :
Wastewater epidemiology, the estimation of population level use of substances based on analysis of samples extracted from sewerage systems, has had a dramatic surge of activity over the past decade. It has been implemented at a massive scale to assess trends in illicit substance use across Europe, as well as at the national level across many countries, providing objective data that facilitate international comparison to an extent not simply possible to date. While excelling in providing macro-level epidemiological data, new innovations in wastewater analyses are also seeking to apply this science to smaller environments. Wastewater analysis (WWA) has been successfully applied at music festivals and sports events.
In this issue, WWA has been applied in novel ways to differentiate levels of substance use in different districts across a city, and two studies have sought to assess wastewater in a prison setting. Wastewater approaches provide the opportunity to dramatically change the way drug testing is conducted in prisons. [Extract]
