ENGLISH: The French Connection, run from Marseille by the Corsican underworld, was the main post-war global network for heroin trafficking. Since the 1970s, three myths have attached themselves to it: (i) it is supposed to have been a centralized and hierarchical organization, (ii) it is believed to have been allowed to thrive thanks to a certain passivity, or even complicity, on the part of the French authorities and, finally, (iii) it is supposed to have been completely wiped out in 1973 following political pressure, thanks to a fierce campaign by the French and US police. A detailed study of the archives and other sources, however, reveals that this was only the tip of the iceberg in a complex global, multinational market. The study shows us that Franco-American collaboration was much more longstanding and successful than was previously thought, and that the campaign of the 1970s merely drove certain elements of the system to set up elsewhere. The French Connection actually only represented one phase in the permanent reconfiguration of the global market for illegal heroin trafficking. |
