ENGLISH: Even though the consumption of cannabis constitutes a major public health issue in France, it has rarely been observed from a historical perspective. Yet, ever since the end of the 1960's, the use of this drug has been in constant increase and is regularly at the center of political debates and media attention, where those urging for its decriminalization face those fearing its negative impact. This dichotomy of opinions can be partly explained by the lack of pure knowledge on this drug use since the cannabis has become an ordinary consumer product. In the framework of the social history of representations, we decided to focus our interest on the first French movies portraying the use of marijuana at the turn of the 1970's. The combination of a cultural approach and a semio-textual analysis has enabled us to identify some of the broad outlines of a national cannabis imaginary in gestation. Thus, the American genesis of marijuana consumption - and of its representations - in France helps to understand the constant need of French movie directors to stress the new and foreign nature of such a phenomenon, in a historical context marked by counter-culture movements and sexual liberation. |
