ENGLISH: From the beginning of needle exchange programs, sterile parapharnelia like cotton filter and Sterifilt® have been supplied to injector drug users (IDUs) to let them reduce the risk of infections as well as to avoid the introduction of solid particles into the body. Since 2009, a new kind of filter called the "wheel" filter is also being distributed. For this filter, a membrane of 0.45 μm of porosity has been chosen to try to protect IDUs against bacteria and spores infections. A study was carried out by the laboratory of Plublic Health and Environment of Paris Sud University to validate the usefulness of this new parapharnelia and to compare the efficiency of the three kind of filters in stopping microorganisms such as Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans. The comparison showed that only the "wheel" filter, was able to retain the selected microorganisms thanks to its smaller porosity. As the most pathogenic bacteria, fungi and yeasts are smaller than 0.5 μm, the "wheel" filter is likely to be efficient against a wide range of pathogenic. |
