Résumé : | "Hurricane Charlie," "Ivory Wave," and "Cloud 9" are a few of many street names for a synthetic stimulant called methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV) that has become a new drug epidemic in the United States. MDPV is marketed as a "bath salt" that is affordable and widely available in convenience stores, smokes shops, or via the World Wide Web. MDPV intoxication has resulted in an increasing number of poison control calls, emergency department visits, inpatient psychiatric admissions, and deaths. A review of the formal literature revealed scant medical information on this new "legal high." The following case outlines the psychiatric manifestations, medical complications, and public health risks of MDPV abuse. [Extract] |
