Objectives:
This review sought to determine the optimal provision of needle exchange schemes among injecting drug users (IDUs). The following key research questions were addressed: (1) What level of coverage of needle and syringe programmes (NSPs) is the most effective and cost-effective?; (2) What types of NSPs are effective and cost effective?; (3) Which additional harm-reduction services offered by NSPs are effective and cost effective?; and (4) Are NSPs delivered in parallel with, or alongside, opiate substitution therapy (OST) effective and cost-effective? |
