Résumé : | "Taking Care of Business," one of the classic papers in the drug field, begins with a brief history of heroin use and distribution in NewYork City from World War I through the late 1960s.The authors note trends in price, availability, and legitimate opportunities for heroin users. The primary focus of the article, however, is the various levels of heroin distribution. Importantly, Preble and Casey dispel the widely held belief that individuals use heroin as an escape. Rather, they argue, heroin allows individuals to experience purposeful lives. The daily activities in which heroin users are involved are highly rewarding to them, particularly when legitimate opportunities are not generally available. |
