Résumé : | Few studies in the social sciences have investigated the nature of anabolic steroid use, despite the introduction of these drugs more than half a century ago. Petrocelli and his co-authors offer excellent insights into bodybuilders' use of steroids. They gained access to this population through their own knowledge and experience of bodybuilding. Drawing from semistructured interviews with 37 males, the authors discuss bodybuilders' motivations for using anabolic steroids, patterns of use (described as "cycles"), health, and related issues. An important finding is the influence of "muscle magazines" that cater to people who are interested in "getting huge." |
