Résumé :
Psychiatrists have access to various effective drugs for treating patients. However, bad results can be expected when they are over-used, prescribed outside of evidence-based indications, or given to the wrong patients. Too many patients are either over-medicated or are misdiagnosed to justify aggressive treatment.
While acknowledging that many current agents are highly effective and have revolutionized the treatment of certain disorders, "The use and misuse of psychiatric drugs: an evidence-based critique" criticizes their use outside of an evidence base. Reviewing the relationship between psychiatry and the pharmaceutical industry and examining some controversies, the text shows that scientific evidence supports a more cautious and conservative approach to drug therapy.
Topics covered include:
The history and science of psychopharmacology
Mood stabilizers and mood instability
Antidepressants
Prescribing for children and adolescents
Alternatives to drugs
Medicalizing distress
The future of psychopharmacology
Written for practitioners and trainees, this book provides a critical and balanced look at the evidence for the use of psychotropic medications in the treatment of psychiatric disorders. [Editor's abstract]
