Résumé : | The first section increases the specificity and reproducibility of definitions and concepts in alcohol and drug abuse, in order to allow clinical work to be more coherent and rational. The second section describes a variety of contextual and social correlates of alcoholism. The section on biological issues explores recent exciting findings and interactions between alcohol and nicotine, clinically vital because of the hith risk of nicotine dependence and lower rates of stopping nicotine use in alcoholics; it also examines the controversial issue of benzodiazepines and alcohol. The final section includes diverse topics important to understanding treatment and recovery: cultural, psychological, and behavioral concerns, and the controversy about treating drug and alcohol abuse together in single programs.
