Résumé : | This book is based on longitudinal ethnographic fieldwork in the Antwerp club scene and repeated in-depth interviews with cocaine users. The overall theme of the book is the genesis and the development of informal control mechanisms (social sanctions and rituals) among these illegal drug users. The Belgian data are compared consistently to the findings of other comparable community studies in European and American cities (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Barcelona, Turin, San Francisco, Toronto) and Scotland and Australia. |
Note de contenu : |
The first 3 chapters explain the research methodology of non-randomized snowball sampling and describe the Antwerp sample (N=111) with social and economic variables.
Chap. 4: Data regarding cocaine use initiation. Chap. 5: The use of cocaine in the Antwerp sample is described with exactly the same variables as in a comparable cocaine study in Amsterdam: dose, frequency of ingestion per week, level of use, distribution of occasions of use during a week, and patterns or changes of use during the user career. Chap. 6 explores six different routes of ingestion of cocaine: snorting, injecting, eating, freebasing, smoking, application on genitals and the factors influencing the choice of route of ingestion. Chap. 7: More data about freebasing cocaine. Chap. 8: The use of other drugs and the use of cocaine in combination with other drugs by members of the sample and to the prevalence of polydrug use. Chap. 9: Qualitative data on buying cocaine: price variations, sources of cocaine, location of cocaine purchase, user's knowledge on cocaine, reliability of dealers and "being ripped off". Chap. 10: Data on the quality of cocaine. Chap. 11: Data on the advantages and disadvantages of cocaine, and on the prevalence of (adverse) effects of cocaine, as perceived by the respondents. Chap. 12: Data on respondents who report periods of abstinence, on cocaine users who seem to be able to cut back (reduce dosage or frequency, without becoming abstinent or quitting), and on respondents who decided to quit cocaine use definitely. Chap. 13 examines this mysterious desire for cocaine. Chap. 14: Data on rules of use applied by the respondents, categories of persons with whom respondents would definitely not use cocaine, and financial limits on cocaine purchase. Chap. 15: Qualitative data illustrating the users' concepts of "controlled" and "uncontrolled" use, or "risky use" and "safe use", or "use" and "abuse". Chap. 16: The patterns of interactions between cocaine users and their family. Chap. 17: The effects of cocaine use on the respondent's relationship with his/her life companion and the ambivalent reputation of cocaine as an aphrodisiac. Chap. 18 discusses cocaine use at work, by using qualitative data on the function of cocaine in 3 occupational sectors (the hotel and catering industry, the arts-related professions, and the sex industry). Chap. 19: The effects of cocaine use on friendships, and the influence friends have on the respondents' cocaine use. |
