ENGLISH : The aim of the European Peer Support Project phase II was: "To implement the 'European Peer Support Manual', which aims at stimulating professional and voluntary organisations to initiate and support peer support groups". The major means to realise this objective were seminars held in Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Portugal and Spain. A number of ten seminars were conducted in seven countries. The target group of the seminars were professionals and key figures interested in working with the concept of peer support. Besides the implementation of peer support as a method we were also interested in 'non-intentional' peer influences in IDU communities towards risk reduction, i.e. peer support as an ongoing reality in IDU communities without external input. This indigenous form of peer support could serve as useful material for a harm reduction strategy. In addition to the seminars a data collection in four cities of the European Union (Antwerp, Dublin, Frankfurt and Montpellier) was part of the project. In this data collection we used a questionnaire especially designed for drug users in order to interview their peers about the question how, from whom and what they had learned about drug use (knowledge, skills, attitude, etc.). The results of this data collection can be found in the report "With a little help from my friends", which has been published separately. Major outcome of this data collection is that drug users pass on relevant information to starting drug users. Accordingly, we argue that drug user organisations as well as professional drug services benefit from this phenomenon by stimulating, supporting and feeding this 'non-intentional' peer support. In this second phase of the European Peer Support Project the network has been broadened and strengthened. In addition to the six countries that participated in the first phase of the project, another three EU countries were included: Belgium, Ireland and Portugal, By organising national or major regional seminars in the participating countries organisations from different regions became involved. The seminars and the data collection were received with open arms in the various countries. Interest and enthusiasm were much bigger than expected. That is why we doubled the capacity of the seminars in three countries. Because there was quite some interest in the perspectives of peer support and other harm reduction measures in prisons a future project around these issues is being considered. (Author' s abstract) |
