Résumé :
ENGLISH :
The 1999 Canadian National Population Health Survey data on alcohol use among the 15-and-older population show that 76 percent were past-year drinkers - 81 percent of men and 72 percent of women. Among youth age 15-19, 74 percent had consumed alcohol in the past 12 months. Only 9 percent of the 15-and-older population were considered abstainers. Data from various sources showed a strong association between use of alcohol and illicit drugs and incidence of criminal activity. Among individuals accessing treatment in the Halifax area, alcohol continues to be the most commonly abused drug; however, an increasing number of polydrug users who have concurrent mental health problems are accessing services. In the Atlantic Provinces, prescription opiates are the major drugs involved in narcotic addiction, with the main supply of injectable opiates being hydromorphone and morphine. (Author' s abstract)
