Résumé :
ENGLISH :
An estimated 13,000-15,000 active heroin users live in San Francisco. Only 5,499 of these individuals received substance abuse treatment during the last fiscal year. Reasons for this are many, but a major factor is the lack of access to services. Many substance users have difficulty with transportation to treatment or lack the monetary funds or insurance to enter treatment. San Francisco plans to combat this problem by expanding services to indigent heroin addicts through a mobile methadone van. The proposed mobile methadone project will address San Francisco's critical need for methadone maintenance treatment slots, and in the process will circumvent structural barriers that might otherwise impede expansion. These barriers include the high cost of rent in the city and the lack of indigent slots. Community Substance Abuse Services (CSAS) of the San Francisco Department of Public Health and San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH) will be working together on this project. SFGH currently has a methadone program with more than 250 clients, and it provides slots for medically indigent individuals in the city. (Author' s abstract)
