ENGLISH : Our clinic has developed a promising behavioral intervention for outpatient treatment of cocaine dependence. The majority, but not all, subjects treated with this intervention across three controlled trials have achieved clinically significant periods of initial cocaine abstinence. The present study was conducted to begin to better understand individual differences in response to this treatment. Numerous demographic, drug use, and other characteristics were examined, but the single best predictor of cocaine abstinence was whether subjects had a significant other participate in treatment. Importantly, this predictor is well defined and its efficacy as a treatment intervention can be readily tested in a randomized trial. Considering the current need for effective treatments for cocaine dependence, such a trial merits consideration. |
