Résumé : |
ENGLISH : Heroin use among young people has been increasing over the past decade. Since 1993, 1% of U.S. 12th graders have reported using heroin, double the previous annual prevalence rates, which had held steady for 14 years (Johnston et al., 2002). The National Household Survey of Drug Abuse reported that among an estimated 471,000 first-time heroin users in 1998, 25% were under 18 (National Household Survey on Drug Abuse, 2000), a significant increase from previous surveys which had indicated that fewer than 10% were under 18. A factor influencing this trend may be that purer forms of heroin which do not need to be injected are available. The Drug Enforcement Agency reports that retail heroin now averages 38% purity, with levels in the northeast reaching 71% purity. This is a substantial increase from two decades ago, when an average 7% purity was reported (Drug Enforcement Agency, 2002). Given this increase in adolescent heroin use and the relative paucity of treatment literature, we present a clinical perspective on the treatment of adolescent heroin use and dependence. It is beyond the scope of this article to review many aspects of adolescent substance use disorders. |
