Résumé : | The Fifth Edition of this popular anthology is a collection of contemporary and classic essays and articles on the changing patterns, problems, perspectives, and policies of both legal and illicit drug use. In these selections, as well as in the commentaries that precede them, the information presented is both theoretical and descriptive, drawn from ethnographic as well as quantitative sources. One of the strengths of this anthology remains its focus on the social contexts in which drug taking, drug-related problems, and drug policies occur. Editors Inciardi and McElrath feature major drugs of use such as: opiates, cocaine, methamphetamine and other stimulants, MDMA/Ecstasy, marijuana, and hallucinogens. The book also addresses legal substances such as alcohol, tobacco, and prescription drugs. Other topics include gender and addiction, sexual identity and drug use, the symbolic meaning of drug taking, issues surrounding drug treatment and recovery without treatment, the relationship between drugs and violence (including sexual violence), cross-cultural research into drug use, and policy issues such as the drug legalization debate. The Fifth Edition includes 13 new articles that address recent and emerging patterns of drug use and policy debates, including: gender and "binge" drinking; cross-cultural research into marijuana use; crystal methamphetamine use among gay men; perceptions of risk and MDMA/Ecstasy; ADHD and Ritalin; gender and drug treatment; OxyContin and crime; and a discussion of safe injection facilities.
