Résumé :
This Statistical bulletin considers the extent of illicit drug use among 16 to 59 year olds in England and Wales in 2006/07 and trends in drug use since 1998 (the beginning of the Government's Drug Strategy) based on data from the British Crime Survey (BCS). It particularly focuses on young people and also looks at demographic and geographical variations in drug use. The bulletin shows that, apart from a 'statistically significant' fall in the use of magic mushrooms, illegal drug use overall was stable between 2005/06 and 2006/07. The trends between 1996 and 2006/07 show that, at 10%, overall use of any drug by 16 to 59 year olds is at its lowest level since the BCS started measurement in 1996. This is mainly due to declines in the use of cannabis (the most prevalent drug amongst 16 to 59 year olds) since 2003/04. Despite continuing concern about the use of cannabis by young people, its use has fallen across all age groups. The bulletin also indicates a large increase in the number of people, including young people, using cocaine powder; since 2003/2004 cocaine has been the second most commonly used illicit drug after cannabis. Heroin figures within the general population are stable. For the first time ketamine has been included in the British Crime Survey. (Editor' s abstract)
