Dealing with the personal motives adolescents give for their drinking, data from more than 5600 alcohol-using students in Switzerland suggest that (1) there are two motive dimensions, valence (positive or negative) and source (internal or external), which confirms theoretical and empirical work conducted in the US, (2) alcohol-related expectancies are no longer linked with alcohol use once drinking motives are taken into account, (3) some beverages better suited to achieve desired effects, (4) motives account for violent behaviors beyond excessive drinking. Finally, a procedure was developed to help adapt prevention activities more closely to the motivations behind adolescent risky drinking. (Editor's abstract) |
