Exploring the psychological role played by the use of substances in borderline patients can enrich the evaluation phase of treatment by illuminating deficits in personality structure and regulation of affect. Focus on the psychological functions of substances may also strengthen the initial therapeutic alliance and stimulate interest among treaters. Clinical examples are presented (Author's abstract)
