ENGLISH : The author presents an innovative view on the role of drug testing in American society. Despite arguments used by promoters of drug testing, it is no longer possible to justify it in terms of increased drug usage or security, and productivity in the workplace. These pretentions do not hold water in the light of the analysis made by the author. An explanation for the growth of drug testing may be found in the business generated for those who promote and organize this process. Moreover, testing may be seen as a subtle and perverted means of social control, with its positive, negative, public or private application of sanctions. These forms of control are described. Starting from the analysis of Foucault, notions of the power of technology to discipline, and automatic docility help explain the control mechanism involved in drug testing. This places the individual in a situation of dynamic surveillance, often on the pretence of self-interest, with a resulting isolation from their peers, and thereby, better control. A survey of student-athletes and railway employees support the author's thesis. Pertinent questions on drug testing in a democratic society are formulated. (Author's abstract) |
