ENGLISH : An overview is given of studies in the social sciences on alcohol and drugs in the Netherlands for the period 1981-1991. This overview is a quantitative and qualitative evaluation, based on the systematic registration of all Dutch research in this area. It is concluded there has been an impressive growth in number, size and importance of the research during the last decade. Relatively more has been done in the area of treatment, prevention and policy (also referred to as "the Dutch approach") than in the area of fundamental research. Drug use has been more often a focus of research than alcohol use. Thanks to epidemiological studies, much more insight has been attained on use and problematic use of both alcohol and drugs in the general population and subpopulations. Treatment evaluation research has been mainly formative - with only a few existing field experimental studies. Given the high level of professionalisation in the Dutch treatment system, a plea is made for more controlled trials, and for patient-treatment matching research. |
