ENGLISH : This book gracefully weaves the story of the rise and fall of the Chambers brothers into the larger story of the rural post-agricultural South and the urban post-industrial North. In the eighties, Billy Joe Chambers and his brothers, native sons of the impoverished Arkansas Delta, migrated north to Detroit in search of economic opportunity. Extremely hardworker, they had seen the crack market and they set out to exploit it. They made their fortune by applying strict business principles to the drug trade. They set up dozens of retail outlets, maintained a network of suppliers, monitored quality control, hired, haired, and managed hundreds of employees, from processors to sellers to lookouts, and kept a close eye on their ever-increasing cash flow. "Land of opportunity" is the first work of sustained narrative journalism to view America's drug epidemic within the complex social context of poverty and failed opportunity in which the American Dream still struggles to be born.
