ENGLISH : The purpose of the study was to determine the satifaction of male and female adolescent (13-18 years) patients with the interior environment of three in-patient drug and alcohol rehabilitation treatment facilities located in the Midwest. The facilities studied were: (A) a renovated dormitory formerly used by young men entering the priesthood; (B) a renovated college dormitory; and (C) a facility specifically built for adolescent in-patient drug and alcohol rehabilitation. The objectives were: (1) To determine adolescent satisfaction with specific interior spaces, type of furniture, and color of finish (wallcovering, floorcovering, windows treatment) in three different in-patient treatment facilities; (2) To compare the interior layouts of the three facilities in relation to patient satisfaction with the space. The type of space, furniture and finishes found in the three facilities did relate to patient satisfaction with the facility. Facilities (A) and (B), both renovated dormitories and built in the 1960, were criticized for their institutional character, the overall lack of comfort, mismatch of furnishings, and general absence of items that make a place "feel like home". Facility (C), specifically designed for adolescent care and built in the 1980s, was highly rated by the patients. The facility provided patients with quality furnishings and finishes of light colored woods, jeweled-toned upholstery, wall-to-wall carpeting, and framed prints and original art work on the walls throughout the facility. The total look was contemporary, upgrade and youthful. (Extract from author's abstract) |
