ENGLISH : This article describes development and implementation of a school-based substance use preventive intervention strategy. The model is unique in the sense that it employs a "systems approach" by specifically linking a comprehensive array of interventions into the infrastructure of an affluent suburban public high school. The intervention are selected and linking to existing school program/personnel components for reinforcement based on local needs assessment survey data. For example, students reported that "health concerns" was a primary factor in their decision to not use drugs ; accordingly, a complete weight training and physical fitness center was established and integrated into the four-year program of health and physical education. Four additional interventions, each dealing with specific aspects of drug education/substance use, were designed as building objectives, thereby focusing resources and all school personnel on their attainment. Formative and summative evaluative data indicate that this application of a "systems approach" contributes significantly to the development of a school environment that supports healthy and positive student behavior. The model is on-going, with an annual readministration of the substance use survey and a corresponding modification of interventions and linkages into the infrastructure of the school.
