ENGLISH: Exaggerated intracellular calcium responses to challenges with serotonin (5-HT) have been reported in depression. Based on these considerations, basal and serotonin-stimulated changes in calcium concentration (Ca++) in blood platelets were studied in three groups of psychiatric patients : those with a major mood disorder, schizophrenic patients, and substance abuse patients and compared with a nonpsychiatric control group. Results showed, consistent with previous reports, that patients with depression exhibited an exaggerated increase in 5HT-stimulated intracellular Ca++. Patients with schizophrenia and substance abuse did not differ from normal controls. The 5HT response was correlated with diastolic blood pressure : however, this association did not fully account for the exaggerated increases in Ca++ responses in the depressed group.
