ENGLISH : The collapse of the Soviet Union and the war in Yugoslavia both encouraged the trafficking of heroin into Europe. Social and political instability and the breakdown of border controls helped reinvigorate the traditional Balkan Route. The driving force behind this expansion was the need for weaponry, but the by-product has been increased drug dependence in the Balkans. (Author's abstract) |
