ENGLISH: As evidence of the size of the hepatitis C (HCV) epidemic among injecting drug users grows, the response in Britain has been in marked contrast to the innovative lead that was taken to tackle HIV among drug users. Recent reports have maintained the position that, though the risk of HCV among injecting drug users (IDUs) is serious, testing is difficult to justify at present and that instead, services should have suitably trained staff available to offer advice. There is no indication at to what form this advice should take. The implications of failing to follow the lead shown in other countries means that IDUs will continue to be exposed to risk of HCV infection, with the effects becoming increasingly apparent over the next few decades.
