ENGLISH : Research on the genetics of alcoholism may concern the clinician in his common practice. Apart from keeping in touch with recent advances on one of the most important field of research on alcoholism (namely genetics), we describe in this review six domains in which looking for familial history of alcoholism may help to take in charge alcohol-dependent patients. Firstly considering the link between familial bakground and personal risk for alcoholism. Secondly looking for the impact of familial history on the type of alcoholism. Thirdly describing the involvment of familial history on severity and prognosis of this disorder. Fourthly taking into account the existence of a cross-vulnerability for the different addictions (specifically, for tobacco and drug). Fifthly, regarding the interactions between familial environment and genetic vulnerability in the comprehension of alcoholism determinants. Lastly describing the concept of genetic protection against alcoholism. These domains highlight the importance of looking for familial history of alcoholism in the global care given to patients with alcohol abuse and/or dependence. (Author's abstract.) |
