ENGLISH : This study compared urinary 5-hydroxytryptophol (5HTOL) with breathethanol testing as an objective way to disclose recent drinking by outpatient attending a methadone maintenance treatment clinic. Random screening was performed on Mondays-Fridays in connection with routine clinic visits for methadone dosing. Among 177 patients, 47 reported intake of any alcohol on the previous day. Only four of those were identified by positive breath-test, while 17 showed a urinary 5HTOL/5HIAA ration above the cutoff limit. Altogether, 59 of 190 methadone-maintained patients had been drinking any alcohol on the previous day, 49% of whom were identified by the urinary test and only 6,8% by utilizing breathanalyzer.
