In summary, the mode of action of ROD remains obscure. Doubts about the basis of ROD are increased by a recent animal study, which clearly shows that rats undergoing naltrexone-induced withdrawal under barbiturate anaesthesia have more severe and more longlasting physical withdrawal symptoms than the control group undergoing spontaneous withdrawal.
