FRANÇAIS : Cette étude utilise un modèle explicatif de comportements de santé pour tenter de comprendre les comportements sexuels à risque chez des héroïnomanes en cours de traitement de maintenance à la méthadone. Selon le modèle IMB : Information-Motivation-Behavioral skills (= Aptitudes comportementales), avoir des informations sur le VIH, être motivé et disposer d'aptitudes comportementales, sont les facteurs déterminants d'un comportement sexuel préventif pour le VIH. Les participants (N=156) héroïnomanes en cours de traitement, ont répondu à des questionnaires sur leur niveau d'information, de motivation, d'aptitudes comportementales et leurs rapports sexuels protégés. Une équation structurelle des résultats du questionnaire permet d'indiquer que le modèle IMB correspond de façon adéquate aux données obtenues. Les différents paramètres du modèle permettent d'expliquer une proportion substancielle des variations du comportement sexuel préventif. Il paraît notamment que l'information et la motivation semblent liés directement et de façon fiable aux comportements sexuels protégés de cette population alors que les aptitudes comportementales ne le sont pas. Le commentaire met en évidence le rôle primordial de l'information et de la motivation comme facteurs préventifs déterminants du comportement sexuel dans cette population et la nécessité d'appliquer les résultats de cette étude lors du développement d'interventions préventives. ENGLISH : The current study represents the application of a health behavior model to account for unsafe sexual behavior (as opposed to unsafe needle use) among heroin addicts in methadone treatment. The Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills (IMB) model of HIV preventive behavior asserts that HIV prevention information, motivation, and behavioral skills are fundamental determinants of HIV preventive behavior. Participants (N = 156 heroin-addicted individuals in methadone treatment) completed assessments of their levels of HIV prevention information, motivation, behavioral skills, and safer sexual behavior. Overall measures of fit generated via structural equation modeling indicate that the IMB model adequately fits the data obtained. The constructs of the model accounted for a substantial proportion of the variance in safer sexual behavior, and tests of parameter estimates indicate that while information and motivation had direct and reliable associations with safer sexual behavior in this population, behavioral skills did not. Discussion focuses on the primary roles of HIV prevention information and motivation as determinants of safer sexual behavior in this population, on the lack of a significant contribution of HIV prevention behavioral skills, and on the implications for intervention of this pattern of findings.
