ENGLISH :
292 drug addicts in the street scene at Hamburg's central station were interviewed in 1999 by means of a questionnaire about their drug habits, if they take drugs in public and about their use of drug services. 63 % had taken cocaine during the last 24 hours, usually in addition to other drugs. This proportion has almost doubled, compared to a study five years ago. Cocaine is taken in 58 % of cases by injection, in 39 % smoked as crack or free-base and in 3 % by sniffing. Cocaine use in the last 24 hours is approximately as frequent as is heroin use. Cocaine smoking was found to be more frequent among female addicts. In average cocaine using female addicts are younger than non-cocaine using female addicts. Cocaine users had started earlier with heroin or cocaine in their drug careers. They more often report a bad physical condition and make use of medical services and needle exchange more frequently. Heavy cocaine users hang around the central station more often, especially in the evening and at night time. Cocaine users more frequently take drugs in public, especially cocaine smokers. Heavy cocaine users express more need for injection rooms. This pilot exploration finds that cocaine use has become just as widespread among addicts in the open drug scene as is heroin use. Public drug taking is largely associated with cocaine users. Drug services have to adapt themselves to that situation. (Author's abstract.)
