Résumé :
The abuse of amphetamine-type substances (ATS) is increasing in Malaysia, as in other parts of Asia. Interviews with 70 randomly selected arrestees who tested ATS-positive showed that nearly 93 percent were male and 87 percent were Chinese. Approximately 93 percent were relatively new ATS users (fewer than 6 months) and about three-quarters used ATS two to three times weekly. Most used ATS with friends. ATS was credited with making users forget problems temporarily and enjoy music at entertainment venues. Effects of use included vomiting, increases in body temperature, being thirsty, being "mentally slower", and having more frequent illnesses. However, according to the respondents, different types of pills produce different effects. According to the respondents, ATS is considered a "designer drug" and therefore not harmful. The price has decreased in recent years as has the quality of ATS pills. (Author' s abstract)
