Résumé :
This paper provides an overview of the Canadian Community Epidemiological Network on Drug Use (CCENDU), which monitors drug use and adverse consequences of drug use at the community level. Recent findings from six reporting sites and national trends are summarized. The data show that while rates of use are lower than in the United States, there are disturbing signs that illicit drug use is increasing among Canadian adolescents. Also, the use of ecstasy at raves is a major concern in reporting sites. High rates of overdose deaths continue in British Columbia, particularly in Vancouver. Injection drug use is now the leading cause of new human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections in all sites, and high rates of hepatitis are reported among injection users. Several sites report increases in problems associated with the recent expansion of legalized gambling. Steps being taken to improve the network's monitoring capabilities in the future are described.
