Résumé : | Objective: to know use of illegal drugs and alcohol before and during 6 years of methadone maintenance treatment by a heroin dependent population. Methodology: 132 opiate dependents who begun MMT were studied. They were followed for six years. Heroin, cocaine and benzodiacepines urine analysis were made during treatment, and also-HCV, HBV and HIV tests. An "ad hoc" protocol, including pretreatment and six-year follow-up drug use, was performanced. Results: at treatment beggining, 100% used heroin (mainly i.v.), 34,6% cocaine, 53,1 % benzodiacepines and 41,4% more than 40 gr/d of alcohol. Along treatment, a clear decrease in heroin and cocaine use was confirmed, specially after first year. After six years of MMT, 3/4 of them were abstinents to heroin and cocaine. Consumers didn't use i.v. route. 50% used benzodiacepines. Only 9,5% drunk more than 40 mg/d of alcohol. Pretreatment cocaine abuse, legal problems, HIV infection and depressive, anxiety or personality disorders were related with ilegal drugs and heavy alcohol use during treatment. Conclusions: MMT showed its effectiveness not only in the heroin use and risk behavior clear reduction but also in helping to decrease cocaine and alcohol consumption, without relevant changes in BZDs use. Good results are evidents after first year of treatment. HIV infection, psychiatric comorbidity and codependence were linked to a worse prognosis. (Review's abstract.) |
