ENGLISH : The idea of a polarised continuum between commodity and singular object, defined by Kopytoff in 1986 and Warnier in 1994 in France, is illustrated by means of the example of cannabis. The tension between the piece of hashish as a commodity and the joint as an authentic object is discussed, and the process of decommodification is analysed. Hashish, as long as it maintains its different mechanisms of domestication may distance it from the extreme pole of commo-dification. On the other hand, the ritual transformation of matter into object makes its singularisation irreversible : rolling is a turning point. Along with this change in status, the spheres of exchange and value systems also change, from a system of market to one of reciprocity and finally to one of sharing at the moment of consumption.
